Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
As has been said, very few strikers guarantee 20 goals a season or thereabouts in all competitions, let alone league goals.

Pre-season you'd have said:

Benteke, Lukaku, Aguero, Costa, maybe Giroud, maybe Bony (if played the full season), maybe Rooney if played through the middle, and Kane (assuming his form held).

At this point, we're looking like only Aguero, Kane, and Lukaku of the likely pre-season candidates will get there (plus of course Vardy and maybe even Mahrez).

Just shows the '20 goals a season' striker is a mythical beast. I actually suspect Sakho could do it if he remained fit all season (hasn't happened yet).

However striker is one area we can improve, as all clubs are looking to do.

I'd quite like to see us prise Rondon from WBA who has been effective in an uninspiring side for his first season in the league, Arnautavic from Stoke, and if we're to throw big money at a player then try for Ighalo (although would by no means suggest it would be successfull).

Batshuayi guarantees us nothing...we've seen some big money flops from France with Newcastle afterall...and the striker area is one that is more prone to failure than most. Even a player like Shevchenko, and guys like Falcao...considered world class forwards...have fallen short.

Emineke should not be considered failed yet either...he'll still be getting up to speed, and has plenty of attributes to succeed. He's not Lukaku (potentially, given hes still only 22 the best striker in Europe) or Aguero...but then very few are. Every club is trying to find the next one of those!

You're wasting your breath arguing with whufcroe and trevorB. They are past masters at twisting your meaning.

You all have a point. Payet isn't undropable. But his ability to turn games with a brilliant set piece or magic moment keeps him in the team even when he's being man marked because it is occupying a defender.

We don't need any players to the next level. Just this.

Wouldn't it be great if Lacazette had brain freeze and came to WHU.

Most of the division are looking for a 20plus goal striker. I had good hopes for EE but apart from the two goals against Blackburn I doubt he will score in the league.

>>> But imagine if we brought a 'real' out and out striker - we'd destroy teams.

I think this is the flaw in the argument - it's using a mythical perfect striker as a form of wish-fulfillment. Obviously buying a better player in any position gets you closer to the dream of a perfect team, but somehow the idea that one striker can do it seems to crop up again and again. Every club in every league is looking for that perfect striker, so the idea that we can unearth one with £20m and a dream is entirely unrealistic imo, and a waste of resources.

If he was going through a continued period of bad form, then yes. For some reason you started going on about 5 games this and 5 games that. You do love a moving goalpost 93, and a massive helping of hypocrisy.

Hammers1993 3:49 Tue Mar 15
Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
I then followed that up by asking if all of those players were fit you would of dropped him then? To which you didn't reply. Maybe read it back.

"Again you are banging on about a game where injuries / suspensions meant we couldn't field player in there correct positions."

and earlier you said to me about payet not being dropped during a poor patch for him, when as i pointed out we had several injuries in attacking positions at the time so there was really nobody to replace him.

do you honestly NOT remember anything you have posted in the past?

Answer this SIMPLE question, Payet has a quiet patch but Antonio still scoring, Lanzini best player on pitch, do you drop Payet?

"You do realise we have played them since? And Bilic started with Antonio, Payet and Lanzini. Crazy right?!"

I do and Antonio wasn't used in an offensive role and we played only THREE offensive players but good to see you've STILL missed the simple point.

Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
would this be when antonio played right back and we were so short on defensive cover that oxford came off the bench?

Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
Anyway this is going off subject..

Back to the original question, if Payet was quiet for 5 games but other attackers were in form still, would you drop Payet?

I have no idea why you can't understand Bilic will sometimes play FOUR offensive players and sometimes THREE, he changes it all the time.

Tottenham is an example of a formation Bilic got wrong, so next time we play them I'm pretty sure we'll be playing with THREE more defensive players instead of two.

Simple stuff really

Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
You are strange. You are bringing a game up where Payet and Antonio wern't even involved in, whilst also saying what would I do if Antonio scored 5 on the bounce and Lanzini being the best player on the pitch.

If that was the case we probably wouldn't get thrashed.

Your original question was "if Payet had a 5 game spell where he is quiet would I drop him?", to what my response was.. no.

Now you are throwing in a game back in November last year where we had injuries and trying to compare that to dropping Payet?

I'll clear it up for you, if Antonio scores 5 on the bounce and Lanzini is the best player on the pitch in your words we would obviously be doing something right, and whilst Payet may be quiet in that game you can guarentee he is at least dragging other players on to him freeing up space for our other players. So no, I wouldn't drop Payet. Christ you are hard work.

Hammers1993 2:36 Tue Mar 15

Are you for real? You do know we got thrashed at White Hart Lane this season right?

We played that day FOUR offensive player and Tottenham had the extra man in midfield and controlled the game.

So IF we had Spurs tomorrow what do you reckon Bilic would do? Go FOUR offensive players again? Of course not, so you have to drop one offensive player and you're saying that would be one of the players in form.

Well arguably there are others better since Cottee (Di Canio/Ashton), but I'm with you in that I think he's an excellent player and he'd comfortably have another 10 goals against his name if he'd stayed fit all season.

Re: A striker will now take us to the next level
"So you think if we had to go next up to White Hart Lane against a very good Tottenham side where playing the wrong formation got us thrashed, Bilic wouldn't change the formation to be more defensive??"

You are now throwing in there that we get a thrashing by Spurs. Nobody can tell the future so obviously I would start Payet at the beginning of the game? I am not sure what you are getting at with the Spurs thrashing being thrown in, as that obviously changes your original question.
